JGSBS will recognize John Wherry, PhD '00, at its annual Alumni Award Ceremony, Lecture and Reception on April 25, 2014.

The event will begin at 4:30 p.m. with a meeting for alumni, followed by the ceremony, lecture and reception open to alumni, faculty and students and their guests. Attendees are invited to stay on campus after dark for star gazing with local astronomers in Lubert Plaza.

Wherry, this year's recipient, is the Director of the Institute of Immunology and Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. His research has been focused on understanding factors that influence the differentiation of T lymphocytes, in particular the cytotoxic subset marked by the expression of CD8+ T cells.

Qualifications for award consideration include one or more of the following:
  • Significant contributions to science (basic and applied), including scientific education and healthcare management
  • Fruitful scientific endeavors outside his or her institution
  • Evidence of outstanding mentorship
  • Service to the community as a scientist
  • Contributions to forwarding the stature of Thomas Jefferson University
The alumnus/alumna selected by the award committee is invited to the JGSBS Alumni Award Ceremony, Lecture and Reception to present a lecture on his or her work and meet with students, alumni and faculty.
